In the warmer months, you can enjoy the outdoors while getting in your exercise. Breathe in the scenery around Rend Lake on their more than 9 miles of bike trails. The complete trail is paved and can be used for hiking or biking.

The Mt. Vernon Reservoir, Veteran’s Park, and Cedarhurst Center for the Arts all provide paved areas perfect for an outdoor walk or bike ride. A variety of other fitness paths and trails can be found throughout the city.

Several groups and organizations in Mt. Vernon host 5k races throughout the year. The 3rd Annual Fall Fest 5k for Special Olympics will be held on Saturday, September 29th at 8 a.m. in downtown Mt. Vernon. Racers can register here. The annual Spero Family Services Trick or Trot 5k will be held Saturday, October 20th at 9 a.m. starting on their main campus. Racers are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes. There’s still time to train and be in 5k shape before either of these races!
